Kokanee Enumerations Program

Kokanee enumerations have been performed in Christina Lake for more than a decade. There are both stream and shore-spawning groups of this species with their own niches within the lake. The stream spawners originated from Kootenay Lake and were introduced by historical stocking, whereas shore spawners are genetically unique and seem to be the sole native stock of Kokanee.

In 2006 there was a high population of bears in the area, and for the safety of our volunteers, no enumerations were done. Around that time, there was also a wash out into McRae Creek from the Kettle Valley Rail Trail that diminished the fish populations in this creek. It took quite a few years to reach the numbers they are at today, and the population is still in the process of bouncing back to what it used to be.

The most recent enumerations occurred at the end of the summer last year. Numbers were down quite a bit from the previous year, but this corresponds to low numbers seen 4 years ago. The life-cycle of the Kokanee is 4 years long, so the fishes that we saw spawning in the fall are the offspring of those that made their way up the creeks in 2011. The Kokanee were also much larger in size than other years, as were those in 2011. Thank-you to all the volunteers, that trekked alongside the creeks and over logs, which made this program possible.

The most recent enumerations occurred at the end of the summer last year. In Sandner Creek it was the second highest count ever, totalling over 12,000. As well, the number of Kokanee counted within McRae and Sandner Creeks continues to increase
